General Job Summary

The Research Computing Center is seeking motivated student employees to work on a variety of projects. Job duties may include backend and/or frontend web programming, developing applications for smart displays, data analysis, and task automation and system management using scripting languages.

Commitment: 10-15 hours per week.

Unit Description

The University of Chicago Research Computing Center (RCC) provides high-end research computing resources to researchers at the University of Chicago. It is dedicated to enabling research by providing access to centrally managed high performance computing (HPC), storage and visualization resources. These resources include hardware, software, high-level scientific and technical user support, education and training required to help researchers make full use of modern HPC technology and local and national supercomputing resources.


• A demonstrable knowledge of computers and interest in learning new computing environments
• Working knowledge of modern interactive programming languages such as Python, R, Python and Matlab
• Good problem solving skills
• The ability to respond quickly and professionally to users of our services
• Experience with Unix and command line driven operations
• Interest in working in a collaborative team environment
• Experience with a compiled language, such as C++/Fortran/Java and related open source tools such as GNU Make and configure
• Experience with version control systems such as Git and SVN
• The ability to compile and install software in a Linux environment.
• Experience with some scientific computing applications: e.g.: image processing, visualization, computational chemistry, etc.
• Experience with databases (SQL), web technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript)
